Super Bananas Could Lead People to Accept GMOs and GEOs

Bananas

Super bananas look like regular bananas in this picture but can produce more Vitamin A and don’t brown when cut.

Scientists have figured out a way to develop "super bananas" and other fruit crops that improve genetically without foreign genes.

They believe this new biotechnological find can help people accept Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Genetically Edited Organisms (GEO).

In GMOs, genes of different species are inserted in a fruit forming a horizontal gene transfer. GEOs only remove one or more genes from the DNA of the fruit then recombine them.

This could mean that GMO products such as super bananas that produce more Vitamin A and turn brown when cut could be making an appearance on groceries, said scientists.

Chidananda Kanchiswamy of Instututo Agrario San Michele said simply avoiding foreign genes makes genetically edited crops more natural than transgenic crops obtained by inserting foreign genes.

Changes in fruit characteristics might be made by small genetic tweaks designed to increase and decrease the amounts of natural ingredients that plant cells already make, researchers said.

Genome fruit editing has become possible due to advent of new tools that give scientists extensive knowledge on fruit genomes.

Despite this, editing tools have not been applied to genetic modification of fruit crops because transgenic fruit crops have been developed using plant bacterium introduced to the foreign gene.

Researchers said plants that are modified using GEO can be considered non-genetically modified depending on interpretations of lawmakers.

Researchers believe their findings could open doors to the development of crops with superior qualities. They also hope their findings will allow commercialization in countries where GMO has met harsh criticism and controversy.

Scientists believe GEO will surge as a natural biotechnology for sustainable agriculture.
