Nintendo has announced that they will be re-releasing the first generation of the series, Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow for the Nintendo 3DS.

The first generation games of the Pokémon series are the Pocket Monsters: Red and Green and were first released in Japan in 1996.  Later on, the series was brought to North America as Pokémon Red and Blue with a special edition Pokémon Yellow debuting shortly after.

Pokémon Yellow is the enhanced version of Pokémon Red and Blue, and was released in Japan two years after the originals. In the Yellow version, certain characters and Pokémon are redesigned to be more similar to their counterparts in the animated TV series.

The appearance of the new re-released games is exactly the same as the original; right down to the monochrome pixel art and 4-bit background music. Meaning there will be no extra colors and flashy animations to distract players from hunting and battling Pokémon. Even though the Nintendo 3DS has increased power compared to the original Gameboy, the company still preferred the old scenario.

The battling and trading of Pokémon's with other players will be done over a wireless connection. That is the main difference of the 3DS compared to Gameboy before who uses a coveted link cable to connect players.

The company did not mention any other details regarding the differences from the original versions. According to Mashable, since many old Game Boy cartridges are not playable anymore because of their internal batteries (designed to keep a game saved even when the Game Boy was turned off and said to last about 15 years), this may be the best way to re-experience the original Pokémon games.

These three legendary Pokémon games will be available for download from the 3DS eShop on Feb. 27, 2016. This is exactly 20 years to the day after the initial release of Pokémon Blue and Red in Japan.
