Islamic State Militants Execute Chinese and Norwegian Captives

(Photo : Reuters) ISIS claims to have executed a Chinese and Norwegian prisoner after their countries allegedly refused to pay ransom for their release.

Islamic State militants announced on Wednesday that they have executed two foreign captives -- a Chinese and a Norwegian. The terrorists also bragged about their latest atrocities and released a photo of a  bomb they claimed brought down a Russian passenger airliner in Egypt last month; killing more than 200 people.

In their online English language magazine Dabiq, the extremist group made the revelations, saying that the Russian jetliner was attacked in retaliation for Moscow's repeated airstrikes targeting ISIS strongholds and positions across Syria.

A picture of the improvised explosive device (IED) that was apparently used to down the plane was published by Dabiq. It consisted of a soda can, a switch, and a detonator.

In a separate announcement, photos, which appeared to be two bodies, were posted on the Dabiq magazine website under the headline "The Fate Of Two Prisoners."

The article said that a Chinese and Norwegian hostage had been executed by the group after they were abandoned by their "kafir" nations and organizations. "Kafir" means "infidel" in the Arabic language.

A previous report by Dabiq magazine said that the militants had asked for ransom money for the release of the two hostages but they had been "abandoned" by their countries, who refused to pay.

The Chinese hostage has since been identified as Fan Jinghui, 50, a freelance consultant from Beijing who was abducted in September. The Norwegian hostage was identified as Ole Johan Grimsgaard, 48, from Oslo. He was abducted in January.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is in Manile attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, condemned the killing and strongly opposed any form of terrorism.

"Condolences to the victim's family members," Xi said. "Terrorism is the enemy of humanity."

The Chinese government made repeated efforts to rescue Fan after he was abducted by the Islamic State.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular news conference that Beijing launched an "emergency response" the moment they were apprised about the ISIS capture of Fan.

Lei said China reiterated its stance on the kidnapping situation, saying that it is firmly opposed to violence against civilians.

In Oslo, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg said that while the government is yet to confirm the authenticity of the Dabiq report, there are no grounds to doubt the article.

At a news conference, she called the killing of her countryman "a despicable and barbaric act."
