Jared Fogle, once a popular spokesperson in Subway advertisements, was sentenced on Thursday to 15 years in prison for engaging in child pornography and having sexual intercourse with under-aged females. Fifteen years ago, Fogle became the front man for the Subway diet. He claims to lost more than 90 kilos by simply eating a subway sandwich every day and exercising.

The New York Times reported that Fogle admitted his guilt but pleaded for a lighter sentence of five years only. However, the presiding judge Tanya Walton rejected the plea and imposed a longer sentence.

Fogle's defense lawyers argued that the Subway sandwiches he ate over the years is the reason why he became a pedophile. The court, however, did not agree and found him guilty of the charges.

The sentence was handed out at the Indianapolis Federal District Court. Aside from the prison term, Fogle is also liable to pay $175,000.

A few years after Fogle's first televised endorsement of Subway sandwiches, he established the Jared Foundation with the stated goal of helping overweight children.

However, police suspected that Fogle and the foundation's former director Russell Talor were involved in child pornography. A search of Taylor's home and office yielded hundreds of child pornography videos.

The prosecutors told the court that Fogle had access to the videos and was well aware that the persons in the videos and pictures are underage and knew some of the children.

Investigators also established that when Fogle was in New York three years ago, he had sex with a female minor and paid her. Fogle contacted the minor afterwards and said that he will compensate her if she can bring him other female minors willing to offer sexual services.

The prosecutor of the case Josh J. Minkler said Fogle's arrest and conviction should serve as a warning to other pedophiles. Minkler said Fogle is currently handing out at least $1 million to his victims as part of a deal. Prosecutors believe that each of Fogle's 14 victims are entitled to receive $100,000.

When interviewed by reporters, Fogle seemed repentant and sobbingly replied that he will not forget what he did.
