Sony unveiled in the news website Wired that they are currently working on a way to bring the PlayStation 2 games into the PS4.

Gamer Headlines reported that several PlayStation 2 games were given a PEGI age rating once they are released on Sony's newest console.

"We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time," a Sonny representative said.

If PlayStation 2 games were running via emulation on the PS4, then it would instantly prompt many gamers to ask when this would be available for other games. However, fans of the PlayStation 4 have long been requesting that the console play PSX and PS2 physical discs, too.

Meanwhile, Microsoft recently announced that they are done working on a backward compatibility of Xbox 360 games for their current console. Currently, Microsoft's Xbox One users are allowed to play backward-compatible Xbox 360 games.

The backward-compatible titles can be downloaded from the Microsoft store or by just inserting the physical disc into the console and downloading the game from Microsoft's servers. Unfortunately, users cannot actually play games directly from the disc.

The Xbox One version of backward-compatible games has also a limit. This feature is not applicable to games that run via peripherals such as the Kinect. It also does not work with a multi-disc game, probably because someone could technically have only one of the four discs for a game like 'Lost Odyssey' and download the full thing. The company is likely working around copyright protection to make sure the multi-disc option cannot be abused.

Sony is already bringing their backward compatibility strategy to a particular PS4 bundle like 'Star Wars: Battlefront.' The game contains a selection of classic games such as 'Super Star Wars', 'Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter', 'Star Wars: Bounty Hunter', and 'Star Wars: Racer Revenge.'
