China is set to build the world's largest international airport that can cater to 100 million passengers at a cost of $13.1 billion.

SIA City Holdings Co. Ltd. Deputy Director Wang Baoling gave the timetable for the planned airport during the China Design Festival in Beijing.

"The new airport will experience two phases of construction and will have an annual throughput capacity of 100 million passengers by 2040, becoming the world's largest airport," Wang said.

Chinese officials confirmed that in five years, the airport will start operating with four runways, accommodating some 45 million passengers annually.

By 2025, the airport will have reached partial completion, and could cater to almost three quarters, or 72 million of the expected target. It is also expected to carry two tons of cargo and mail, and will have four airstrips by then.

Xinhua reports that all in all, they plan to create seven runways and a freight capacity of 4 million tons.

The new airport will be situated in the Beijing's Daxing District, and is set to be fully functional by 2040. It comes as an answer to China's growing demand for air travel, and is expected to balance the progress of both southern and northern parts of the city.

The planned phoenix design will not only echo the dragon-shaped Beijing Capital International Airport but also bring convenience to passengers. CRI reports that luggage arrival time will only take 13 minutes, and customs-to-boarding-gates distance is only an 8-minute walk.

China's latest structure topped The Guardians' "Megastructures: Seven Wonders of the Modern World Near Completion."

Currently, the largest airport with 96 million yearly passengers is the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

According to data from the Airports Council International, in 2013, the Beijing Capital International Airport served 83.7 million travelers, and was the second busiest airport in the world, behind Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the U.S.
