Underground Organization Anonymous: Good or Bad?

After police in Ferguson, CO shot an unarmed black teenager to death, the organization called "Anonymous" had claimed to ID the police officer that was involved in the shooting. However, the group came to the wrong conclusion and disclosed the wrong name, which police later confirmed as officer Darren Wilson.

Considering police officials aren't too quick to release any details of tragedies to the public, many people consider the organization to be one of the better sources online for information they have available to them.

Anonymous are known for analyzing and hacking online data to put together any information about continuing events around the world, and has gained a group of dedicated followers in multiple countries. However, the organization is not flawless.

Kathie Warnack, stepmother of the released name by Anonymous, was very upset when she heard the news. "I guess I'm going to have to sleep with my gun and put cameras on the house," she said. "Anonymous has really gotten out of hand."

Anonymous isn't wrong that often, according to Gabriella Coleman, a professor at McGill University who's on the verge of publishing a book about the group. Coleman says Anonymous are usually very factual with their information, and uses the Operation Steubenville as an example.

Anonymous did get some things right about the Ferguson incident at least, as other information including audio recordings of police officers during the incident that were released have turned out to be real.

Despite the wrong information that was released regarding the police officer's identity, Anonymous has been a very important source of information online to the public and the efforts do not go unnoticed.

"The only facts that the people St. Louis and Ferguson get - the only new leads - are from Anonymous, because the police department won't tell us anything," Rap artist Tef Poe told the Post.
