Kings Make Undrafted Center First NBA Player of Indian Descent

Sim Bhullar

The Sacramento Kings signed New Mexico State center Sim Bhullar making him the first player of Indian descent to be signed by an NBA team.
"Dreams do come true! Officially signed my first NBA contract with the @sacramentokings !!," said Bhullar, who broke the news on Twitter
The New York Times described him as the world's first prominent men's basketball player of Indian descent and he did just that. The 7-foot-5, 360-pound rookie joined the Kings team that dominated the summer league in Las Vegas last month. Bhullar, 21, made the team even though he only averaged 2.5 minutes in four games.

He will serve as a backup center for the injured DeMarcus Cousins, but will play mostly for the Reno Bighorns, the Kings' affiliated team in the NBA Development League.
"I've long believed that India is the next great frontier for the NBA, and adding a talented player like Sim only underscores the exponential growth basketball has experienced in that nation," said Vivek Ranadive, majority owner of the Sacramento Kings franchise, in a statement.  "While Sim is the first player of Indian descent to sign with an NBA franchise, he represents one of many that will emerge from that region as the game continues to garner more attention and generate ever-increasing passion among a new generation of Indian fans."
Originally from the state of Punjab in India, Bhullar's parents migrated to Canada. His younger brother, Tanveer, with a height of 7-foot-3, is also showing glimpse of potential to be in the world of professional basketball. Their father, Avtar, primarily wanted them to play the cricket, the popular sport in India.
The Toronto-born center averaged a total of 10.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks within 25.3 minutes in 65 games for two season at New Mexico State. He led the Aggies to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2013 and 2014 and was a two-time MVP for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
The undrafted player also did workouts for the Toronto Raptors before the NBA draft.
