Injured Juan Martin del Potro Pulls Out of US Open

The age-old nemesis of many tennis players struck once again.

Juan Martin del Potro has pulled out of the 2014 U.S. Open after injuring his wrist on his off-hand.

The Argentinean right-hander had undergone surgery on his left wrist in March, seeking to make his return on the year's last Grand Slam tournament.

Del Potro, who beat Roger Federer to win the U.S. Open trophy in 2009, last played a match on tour in Dubai. The 25-year-old retired in the second set of his match against India's Somdev Devvarman in late February, and only returned to court at the end of May, according to reports.

The former U.S. Open champion is currently ranked at the 11th place. His spot in the main draw was taken by Italian Simone Bolelli, who was previously ranked in the 88th place, according to the U.S. Tennis Association.

Del Potro surprised many tennis fans when he slipped under Federer to win the U.S. Open title in 2009. For several years, the Argentine held the title of the only player outside the top four - Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Federer and Andy Murray - to win a major.

Stan Wawrinka took Del Potro's solo act when he won the Australian Open early in the year.

Meanwhile, another tennis champion who is nursing an injured wrist is left-hander Rafael Nadal.

Nadal's absence in Cincinnati was noted after he injured his right wrist during practice shortly before the Rogers Cup in Toronto last week. The tennis champion, who has been sporting a splint on his hand since the injury occurred, is scheduled to make an announcement next Friday if he will compete in New York or not.
