Adele Breaks 15 Year-Record, Now the Biggest Selling Album for a Single Week

The 'Adele Effect'

Adele's return to the music scene is no question an unmatched feat, as the British singer's new album, 25 keeps on breaking records. Adele has just hit the record as the best selling album for a single-week in the U.S., Nielsen Music revealed. And to top it, 25 is slated to reach three million copies in sales during its first week, industry forecasters said.

25 hit the market on Nov. 20, released by XL/Columbia Records. This is Adele's third studio album, following 21, which was released in 2011.

According to Nielsen Music, the album sold 2,433,000 copies only four days after its released, dethroning boy band NSync as the record holder, which it held since 2000 after it released No Strings Attached. NSync's album sold 2,416,000 sales for the week ending on March 26, 2000.

Albums these days rarely reach that feat. NSync achieved its record success in the era when streaming or downloading was not yet a word of mouth in music and CD sales were at their record heights. It's a good decision that Adele and her record labels decided to hold back the streaming of 25.

Determining accurate album sales are now determined by 50 percent CD sales and 50 percent digital sales.

"[In 2000], the album was the only point of entry for people," Dave Bakula, VP for industry insights of Nielsen Music, said.

"This thing is going to be pushing close to three million by the end of the week, a number I don't think anybody in the industry thought we'd see, ever. It's crazy," Bakula continued.

According to Bakula, it is still unknown whether the decision to withhold 25 from streaming services is a good decision, but if this proves a good formula in bolstering album sales, then, other artists might decision to follow suit. The concern, however, is whether all artists, who are not as popular as Adele, could reach the same success and she does.

"The thing that concerns me the most is that other artists that aren't named Taylor or Adele are going to think this is the right strategy for them," Bakula said.
