A recent study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) shows that the drinking habits of men and women in America are now starting to become more the same.

"The percentage of people who drank alcohol in the previous thirty days increased for females from 44.9 percent to 48.3 percent, but decreased for males from 57.4 percent to 56.1 percent between 2002 and 2012," reported Fusion about the results of the study. "Over that time, the average number of drinking days in the past month also increased for females, from 6.8 to 7.3 days, but decreased slightly for males, from 9.9 to 9.5 days."

The study, which was published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, used the data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health for its analysis.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) added that binge drinking among college students between the ages of 18-25 was consistently steady during the period of the study. What makes it interesting to know is that the number of male college students, who engaged in binge drinking, has reduced over time. The case of college women students, however, was the exact opposite.

"Overall, women are drinking slightly more, and men are drinking slightly less," cited Cosmopolitan with regards to the results of the study.

NIAAA Director George F. Koob opined that the results of the study is troubling.

He added that women have higher risk of acquiring heart diseases and other illnesses caused by too much alcohol consumption. Such illnesses include cancer, liver inflammation and neurotoxicity.

Meanwhile, it was noted that the number of men who gut arrested due to drunkenness is still higher than that of women.

"Men are more likely to be arrested for driving under the influence, to be hospitalized with alcohol poisoning and to die in alcohol-related traffic accidents," Fusion reported.
