Chinese company VTech, which makes popular electronic toys for kids, has revealed that its Learning Lodge app store has been hacked.

In a statement on Friday, the company said that an unauthorized party accessed customers' information in a database of the Learning Lodge app store where parents can download apps, games, e-books, and educational content for VTech toys.

Name, email address, mailing address, IP address, password, and download history are the customer data contained in the database. But there was no credit card information according to the company.

The company did not confirm how many customers were affected. But Motherboard reported that nearly 5 million parents and more than 200,000 kids were exposed. Motherboard was the first to report the hack, and according to them, kids' first names, genders, and birthdays were the hacked data.

There are a variety of motives for hackers. Customer data are being sold on the Web's black market. Criminals are allowed to steal goods with another person's identity. Stolen data can also be used for a range of phishing attacks designed to target people through their email addresses and get them to click on links in order to steal even more sensitive information.

An unidentified hacker, who claimed responsibility, apparently notified Motherboard of the breach and said that he intends to do nothing with the data.

A VTech spokesperson Grace Pang told Motherboard in an email that they were not aware of this unauthorized access until they were alerted. The company mentioned that information on customers from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Latin America, Luxembourg, and Spain.

VTech would be among the largest hack in recent years if the hack is accurate as Motherboard reported. The company has not responded yet to a request for more information. But it is reportedly investigating the hack and has taken steps to prevent any future hacks.
