NVIDIA SHIELD Tab vs. iPad Mini 2: Features, Specs, Price

NVIDIA recently debuted its new tablet, SHIELD, which can be bought from many retail and online outlets in select regions.

 A worldwide release has yet to come but two NVIDIA SHIELD variants are currently being offered: the LTE and Wi-Fi only models.

Dubbed as a gaming tablet, SHIELD is powerful enough to handle technologies and offer an excellent PC gaming experience. Let's compare the new NVIDIA SHIELD and Apple's iPad Mini 2 to see the differences.

NVIDIA SHIELD can be seen either as a cheap Android tablet that features powerful specs or as a gaming power machine in a tablet.

The Tegra K1-equipped SHIELD runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat while the iPad Mini 2 runs on an upgradable iOS 7 and could soon run on iOS 8.

The iPad Mini 2 comes with 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB internal storage variants.

On the other hand, SHIELD comes only with 16 GB and 32 GB built-in storage but with microSD card support unlike the iPad Mini 2.

The iPad Mini 2 has a dual-core Cyclone Apple A7 ARM v8-based 1.3 GHz processor while the NVIDIA SHIELD is powered by a relatively superior quad-core Cortex A15 2.2 GHz processor with Kepler 1 SMX GPU.

The iPad Mini 2 only has 1 GB of RAM while the NVIDIA SHIELD has 2 GB of RAM.

SHIELD is thick at 9.2mm while the iPad Mini 2 with Retina comes light and svelte at 7.5mm. The new NVIDIA SHIELD sports an 8-inch IPS LCD display with 1920 x 1200 pixel screen.

The iPad Mini 2 comes with a 7.9-inch IPS LCD display with 1536 x 2048 pixel screen resolution. The SHIELD pixel density is at 283 ppi while the iPad Mini 2 is at 324 ppi.

Both the SHIELD and iPad Mini 2 have 5 megapixel rear cameras without flash.

SHIELD comes with a 5 megapixel front facing camera while the iPad Mini 2 only has a 1.2 megapixel one. The iPad Mini 2 has a Li-Po 23.8 Wh battery unit while SHIELD has a 5,197 mAh one.
