Former New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jimmer Fredette fashioned out an amazing NBA D-League debut, pouring in 37 points and dishing out eight assists for the Westchester Knicks in a 102-90 victory over the Grand Rapids Drive at the Westchester County Center on Monday.

The 26-year-old Fredette, who was drafted 10th overall in 2011 by the Milwaukee Bucks after being named the National College Player of the Year as a senior at BYU, was waived by the San Antonio Spurs a week before the NBA regular season began but was then selected by Westchester with the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA D-League Draft.

He returned to the NBA on Nov. 10, suiting up once more for the Pelicans as the team was plagued by various injuries to its backcourt lineup. But after playing three minutes a night in only four games, he was waived by New Orleans on Nov. 19, bringing him back to the D-League Knicks last Saturday.

Fredette made sure to show the Pelicans what they missed from him if only given enough playing time.

"It was great to be able to go out there and just play," said the former Sacramento Kings rookie via the New York Daily News.

Fredette hit 12-of-17 from the field and went to the free throw line a dozen times en route to the 37-point outburst.

The New York Post noted that if Fredette continues this level of play in the minors, then he "could be a fit for the NBA Knicks because of their perimeter-shooting woes" and team president Phil Jackson "has yet to fill his 15th roster spot" at the moment.

Hopes from New York fans to be able to see their hometown hero play for their hometown NBA team had been high since the offseason, but there were simply no opportunities given to the Glens Falls native to showcase his talent.

Fredette has NBA career averages of 6.1 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in a measly 13.7 minutes of playing time per night in only 229 games since the 2011-2012 season. He had played for the Kings, Chicago Bulls, and the Pelicans and showed flashes of brilliance in scoring despite the limited chances.

However, his greatest weakness is on the defensive end, which is perceived by NBA analysts as the aspect of his game that he needs to improve in order to secure a long-term career in the pro league.
