Ferrer, 32, struggled on his serve in the first game of the second set but eventually held his serve and saved five break points.

The sixth-seeded Ferrer got his composure back and shocked Federer by breaking his serve three times to capture the set 6-1, extending the match to a third set.

Federer started the deciding set with an early break to move up 3-1. He then broke Ferrer again at 5-2 and served out for the match.

Federer makes history again by appearing six times in the finals and winning all six W&S titles.

"I'm very happy about the week," Federer said. "Just overall it went from good to great."

The Swiss now has 80 career titles and is third in the list behind Jimmy Conners with 109 and Ivan Lendl 94.

Both players now have their eyes set on the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York slated to start on Aug. 25.

Federer's last Grand Slam title was at Wimbledon in 2012 and his chances in winning the U.S. Open seems likely as defending champion Rafael Nadal is in doubt with a wrist injury. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic seems to be having trouble with his game after failing to reach the quarterfinals in Torontd Cincinnati.
