There were also some new game announcements and trailers in addition to the awards. Geoff Keighley hosted and produced the ceremony. He mentioned that series mastermind Hideo Kojima was not able to be present at the awards because of Konami, his employer, prevented him from doing so. Keighley produced Game Awards following his run as a host of Spike's VGX Awards in 2013.

Witcher 3 won CD Projekt Red the honor of Developer of the Year along with the Best RPG Game award. It competed against 'Bloodborne,' 'Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain,' 'Fallout 4,' and 'Super Mario Maker.'

'Rocket League' won both Best Independent Game and Best Sports/Racing Game. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain won the Best Soundtrack and Best Action/Adventure Game. 'Her Story' won two awards for both Best Narrative and the Best Performance category for the role of actress Viva Seifert.

Kinda Funny's Greg Miller won Trending Gamer, 'Counter Strike: Global Offensive' won eSports game of the year, 'Portal Stories: Mel' won Best Fan Creation, Kenny 'KennyS' Schrub was named eSports Player of the year and Optic Gaming won as Team of the year, and 'No Man's Sky' won Most Anticipated games. Miller's speech time on Trending Gamer was not only to speak of his accomplishments but also to emphasize on those behind the games that have inspired his and so many others' line of work.

A panel of 30 individual judges from various outlets decided the winner of Game Awards. This is the second Game Awards since the ceremony's incarnation.
