Infielder Starlin Castro has been acquired by the New York Yankees via a trade from the Chicago Cubs to become the team's new second baseman. The Cubs, on the other hand, took pitcher Adam Warren and another player yet to be named from the Yankees.

According to an ESPN report, multiple reports and sources indicate second baseman Brendan Ryan is the player to be named.

Castro, a three-time MLB All-Star hailing from the Dominican Republic suits the Yankees' objective of transforming the team into a more athletic and younger squad. The 25-year-old baseball professional hits right-handed and he was the 2011 National League leader in hits.

In the last season of Major League, New York struggled against left-handed pitching. Castro being right-handed fits the Yankees requirement. The team also like that Starlin can be versatile to back up third base and shortstop when he is not starting at second.

"Between the youth, the flexibility, the right-handed bat - he's got a history of hitting left-handers; clearly that's an area that we needed to better improve our balance in the lineup - it kind of checks off a lot of the boxes here." Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said in Daily News.

Cashman also stated that the ballclub did not receive any money from the Cubs in the deal and that the added payroll is not an issue given Castro's $7 million compensation next season and the other salaries headed to the Cubs.

Castro, who is coming off from a discouraging season at the plate but did rebound to hit good performances at the end of the season, is owed $38 million over the next four years after securing a seven-year $60 million contract extension with the Cubs last August of 2012.

The Yankees has a team option for $16 million in year 2020 with a $1 million buyout.

Castro will join forces with shortstop Didi Gregorius to create a young, potentially vigorous and powerful core in the Yankees' infield.
