WNBA is known with a huge lesbian fan base as well as a large number of lesbian athletes. The celebration received a widespread positive reaction, something that is not always given in the league.

The league was not safe from controversies related to lesbians. It was in 2002 when lesbian fans remonstrated against the New York Liberty complaining that they are being ignored. The Washington Mystics scratched the kiss cam where lesbians are being broadcasted within the whole arena in 2009.

On the other hand, the WNBA declared that the league will be active in promoting to its gay fans through athletes and teams getting involved with Pride events.

The Baylor standout has been very open about her sexuality. Kim Mulkey, Griner's coach in Baylor, together with the university officials did not allow her to come out yet as it may affect her draft stock.

According to Griner, interviewed by Sports Illustrated, "If I can show that I'm out and I'm fine and everything's OK, then hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way."

After her days at Baylor, WNBA's new star found her new family. The league has become a place where she can be herself.

Now that the two announced their plans to take their relationship to the next level, Griner's life under obscurity is over.
