Apple's next-generation iPhone, which is likely to be called the iPhone 7, could come with a waterproof feature.

The company has not unveiled the full features of the next generation iPhone. However, Apple advertised the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus with waterproof capabilities. The two devices are water-resistant to a certain degree. The new iPhone 6S features a protector on its internal components from water damage.

Apple has reportedly filed a patent for an "electronic device with hidden connector." The company's new patent is described as a "self-healing elastomer." The patent features a cover for the iPhone USB port, headphone port, and other openings to prevent water and debris from entering inside the phone.  Meanwhile, iPhone users can still insert headphones and USB connectors into the iPhone's ports via the elastomer. When the users remove the connector on their devices, the elastomer will automatically expand and seal the ports.

There are rumors that Apple's may incorporate the technology in the iPhone 7. The company seems to be taking the waterproofing technology seriously, as iPhone 6s already has this feature. There is a big possibility that future Apple iOS devices will also sport this technology.

Recently, Apple won a patent for a technology that uses sound to eject water and other liquid materials from speakers. The company also owns a patent for a different technology that deploys shutters to close the openings over critical components. The shutters feature an automatic response technology immediately the device detects liquid or other damaging elements. Users can also set the shutters manually.

Last month, there was a rumor that the iPhone 7 will come without the 3.5mm headphone jack to reduce the thickness of the device by more than 1mm. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, iPhone 7 will be the slimmest iPhone ever made. The next iPhone will be powered by A10 processor.

Apple's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are expected to be released in Sept. 2016.
