Id Software is considered one of the most successful video game developer studios in history, well-known for bringing titles such as "Wolfenstein 3D" and "Doom." However, prior to this success, Id Software had a pretty crazy idea to get the attention of the company that helped revolutionize the video game industry, Nintendo.

During its early days, Id Software reportedly created a PC version of Nintendo's mega-hit title "Super Mario Bros. 3." The plan was to get the attention of Nintendo and convince the company to license Id Software's creation and eventually work with them. However, the story did not go as Id Software planned.

Nintendo scrapped Id Software's creations, and the project was eventually buried deep in the annals of video game history.

Recently, Id founder and a prominent figure in the video game industry John Romero uploaded an extensive collection of demo videos to Vimeo. The collection of videos gave people a hint of what Id Software's version of the "Super Mario Bros. 3" looked like.

Behind Id Software's project is the programming wizard John Carmack. He is responsible for creating a side-scrolling platform game for desktop computers of the 1980s. Carmack would later leave his mark in video game history as the genius who created the revolutionary engine that ran Id Software's first-person shooter video games.

During the early days of the video game industry, Carmack's side-scrolling platform was considered an impressive technological leap and was originally deemed an impossible task to overcome. This style of video game can be found on almost all of Carmack's projects.

When Nintendo ditched their proposal, the team behind it quit their jobs and created Id Software. The team retooled the game and eventually release it as the original "Commander Keen."
