Lack of forensic experts has forced Sri Lankan officials to yet again postpone the extraction of a suspected Muslim mass grave in a former war zone, reports stated on Monday.

Investigations have been performed in Kalavanchikudy, an eastern coastal town in Sri Lanka, after a resident reported in June that remains of Muslims who were killed by Tamil Tiger terrorists more than two decades ago were buried near the coast off Kurukkalmadam.

Abdul Majeed Mohammed, the resident who motioned for the excavation of the site, explained that the Tamil Tigers abducted and killed about 100 Muslims and buried them in the area.

The excavation was supposed to begin on Monday though Sri Lanka authorities re-scheduled it for a second time because of failure to acquire forensic expertise to work on it.

According to reports, the Colombo Chief Judicial Medical Officer and the Government Analyst are needed during the excavation process.

Exhuming of bodies from the alleged mass grave is now scheduled for November 24, as per the Kaluwanchikudy Court magistrate.

Prior to the mass grave report on the eastern coast, several similar sites were discovered on the island which became a war zone during the country's ethnic battle in the 1980s.

Several civil rights advocates have accused the Sri Lankan government of protecting the mass graves, citing that the country's officials do not want the remains to be found.

During the 37-year-long ethnic cleansing, the majority ethnic Sinhalese fought with the Tamils from the north. The former are mostly Buddhist while the latter are Hindus.

Only 10 percent of the total population of the area comprises Muslims who mostly refused to take part in the fighting.

However, Tamil Tigers carried out mass killings of Muslims in the eastern part of the island in order to create a separate area to settle.
