Nintendo has announced that its 'Splatoon' game has reached 1 million sales in Japan and become one of the most best-selling titles for the console Nintendo Wii U.

The company reported that it passed 1 million sales some time ago, but for some reason Nintendo waited till now to announce it.  The total number of sales includes the digital copy of the game. According to Nintendo, the number of total sales was calculated inside Japan. There is no exact worldwide total but it is estimated in excess of 3 million, which is very impressive for a new IP on the low-selling Nintendo Wii U console.

The 1 million total sale of Splatoon is not that far behind Mario Kart 8 in Japan. The Nintendo Wii U console is more popular than in the West but the console still struggles to outsell Sony's PlayStation 4 most of the time. However, this week for Nintendo is good one as its Splatoon game is currently the number three in the charts which followed by Super Mario Maker at number four. For some reason, the Nintendo Wii U also outsold Sony's PlayStation 4 at 47,890 consoles to 38,497.

Nintendo Wii U marks some sort of achievement with that number of sales but the console still far behind of the PlayStation 4. In addition, Nintendo Wii U is still less popular to the gamers compared to the popularity of the Nintendo 3DS and Sony's PS Vita.

Along with the triumph of Splatoon sales, Nintendo also announced that they will be rolling out 2 new maps for the game. The original Splatoon game has only 5 maps but with this update there will be a total of 16 playable maps players can enjoy.

Splatoon's two new maps are called Ancho-V, which takes place in an office with platforms that players can move up and down by shooting them, and Piranha Pit, which is set in quarry with lots of steep escalators.

The Splatoon game recently won as one of the best multiplayer game during The Game Awards event this year.
