American boxer Sugar Shane Mosley, the former three-division world titlist, knocked out Venezuelan Patrick Lopez in the 10th round of a welterweight bout on Thursday night at the Roberto Duran Arena in Panama City.

Mosley (49-9-1, 41 KOs), overcame a first-round cut caused by a head clash to knock down Lopez (23-6, 14 KOs), 37, in the second round and twice more in the 10th round. The 44-year-old boxing icon who is approaching his 23rd year as a pro fighter scored the 41st knockout win of his career at the expense of the former two-time Olympian.

According to an article of The Ring, Mosley fought with a lot of heart even as the cut that he suffered was sporadically bleeding. He was able to connect on the target and rocked Lopez with a leaping left hook near the end of the second round, making the Venezuelan pugilist wobbly-legged but was still able to finished the round.

Lopez proved hardwearing, having previously been knocked out just once in his boxing career, being stopped by Tim Coleman in the third round of their 2010 bout. Still, he was unable to dominate Mosley, failing to land shots with his left hand that made him open for the sweeping power punches of Mosley.

In the tenth round, Mosley was already ahead in the scorecards when he again sent Lopez skidding to the canvas with less than a minute in time. Lopez rose but caught a right hand and fell into Mosley, but it wasn't ruled a knockdown. A left hook that put Lopez back down was ruled one though, and a follow-up bevy of punches ended the fight for good.

According to an ESPN report, the win was Mosley's second in a row by way of a knockout. He returned to the ring in August for the first time in nearly two years in retirement, and knocked out former two-division titleholder Ricardo Mayorga in the sixth round for a second time.
