Anita Mui may have been dead for 12 years, but her memory as an iconic music symbol lingers.

Events such as memorials and concerts are usually held every year to commemorate her death, but this year, fans, friends and relatives were surprised to find that HSBC Trustee, the administrator of Anita's estate, held an online auction of her personal effects from December 10 to December 22.

Proceeds were said to go to living arrangements for her mother, 92-year-old Tam Mei Kam, but Anita's mother is actually living way above the poverty line. Anita willed $70,000 HKD a month for her mother's living expenses. Sadly, reports revealed that Tam Mei Kam was evicted from her apartment in April for not paying six months worth of rent.

Among the items that were put up on auction sale were Anita's trophies, notably the trophy she got after winning TVB's New Talent Singing Competition in the 1980s. But what shocked her friends the most was that even her most private belongings were on sale, like her underwear!

Eric Tsang, one of Anita's closest friends, urged fans not to join in the auction, not only as a gesture of respect for the singer, but also to keep her legacy intact.

Singer Andy Hui, one of Anita's pupils, was enraged with the auction, lashing at organizers for the haphazard plan.

"It was handled very wrongly. Hopefully there will be a way to resolve this," he said.

To this day, Anita Mui is hailed for her contribution to Cantopop music. With her sold-out concerts, best-selling albums, and numerous feats, she was hailed as "Madonna of Asia". Until her death from cervical cancer in 2003, she was singing in public. She had just finished her farewell concert in Nov. 2003 when she died weeks later, on Dec. 31 that same year.
