Lionsgate unveiled plans for first touring exhibition for the “Hunger Games” theme park

Lionsgate will be opening a touring exhibition for "The Hunger Games" as their first phase for unveiling a theme park solely dedicated to the highly popular book and movie series.

According to the movie studio, it is "deep into conversation" with theme park partners interested in further expanding and working on the thrilling project.

The "Hunger Games" franchise has brought about substantial gains for Lionsgate by grossing just about $1.67 billion at the world box office. As such, the company continues to seek new means of cashing in on the series' success.

With the books broken up into four movies, two installments are still slotted to be released including the third film "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part1" on November 21.

Lionsgate will find out whether the flourishing post-apocalyptic franchise can make a profitable theme park when it launches "The Hunger Games: The Exhibition", the first touring exhibit, in the summer of 2015.

The movie studio has collaborated with theme park creator Thinkwell Group to push through with their plans. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer has opened up at a conference last Friday about their future plans for the franchise's various extensions.

"Thinkwell... is spearheading an initiative for line extensions of "The Hunger Games" and all of our other brands," said Feltheimer.

In particular, Lionsgate has already come up with a "state-of-the-art" travelling museum that uses costumes and other "Hunger Games" components and will begin its tour in the U.S. in the middle of next year.

Feltheimer also claimed that the studio executives are "excited about these [theme park] opportunities and are pursuing them."

Moreover, the Lionsgate CEO has also mentioned about "The Hunger Games: The Exhibition" being the first of several "extensions" of Lionsgate film franchises, such as "Twilight" and "Divergent".

Considerable success has been achieved by the vampire-themed romance "Twilight" for Lionsgate, with the five-part-series raking in nearly $3.34 billion at the world box office. Meanwhile, sci-fi action film "Divergent" has similarly gained substantial success by grossing $273 million worldwide, with only the first out of four movies being released.

Such franchises have followed the footsteps of Universal Orlando's opening of "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010". While the initial site cost nearly a whopping $264 million in development, a new area for Diagon Alley has recently opened, costing approximately $399 million.

There have been no details whether Lionsgate is to establish a stand-alone theme park or to merely incorporate themed attractions to parks that have already been developed.
