China's domain code ".cn" is now ruling the world wide web, becoming the largest and most used domain with over 16 million users and outranking Germany's ".de" from the top spot.

Domain manager China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC) revealed that at the end of 2015, websites with ".cn" domain had reached 16.36 million. CNNIC head Li Xiaodong claims that the domain is also dominating resolution services, security and use ratio.

After the Chinese government strictly required the use of real names during registration in 2009, China's ".cn" domain has been able to protect users' welfare and lessen incidences of data theft, hacking and fraud.

China surmounted Germany's '.de' domain in terms of the number of registered websites. CNNIC revealed Chinese institutions and companies were not the sole consumers of the domain as international institutions and multinationals utilize it as well -  including Apple, Microsoft and Amazon.

Xinhua reported that it is also used both by the central and provincial government offices including telecom companies along with commercial banks like Citibank.

China has approximately 670 million internet users and more than 4 million registered websites. The domain is being run by a branch of the ministry of industry and information. 

Country code domain, otherwise known as country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), is an Internet top-level domain composed of two letters. Most of the time, it is designated or reserved for a country, sovereign state or dependent territory. The use of ccTLD was implemented by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, an institution that manages top-level domains and takes care with the assignment of IP addresses and ports among other things.
