'The Monkey King 2,' 'Crouching Tiger 2' and 'From Vegas to Macau 3' to Face Off in Chinese Box Office

Chinese moviegoers are eagerly anticipating the country's biggest movies of the year, which will collide in theatres this coming Lunar New Year holidays.

The most-anticipated would-be blockbusters are: The Monkey King 2, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, From Vegas to Macau III, and Stephen Chow's The Mermaid. These movies will battle for China's box office top spot as they premiere on Monday, February 8.

The Monkey King 2, the sequel to the 2014 box office smash The Monkey King, is predicted to lead the race given that it has already beengranted exclusive IMAX rights throughout China. There are roughly two hundred IMAX cinemas in mainland China and they will only be showing The Monkey King 2. Experts have pegged The Monkey King 2 to out-gross its competitors by 200 million RMB. The film stars Aaron Kwok and Gong Li.

Despite its expected hit, actor Aaron Kwok still urges moviegoers to support all the movies who will be shown on Lunar New Year day.

The sequel to the smash 2000 hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny stars Michelle Yeoh, who reprises her role as Yu Shu-lien. It will also premier on New Year holiday. The martial arts film's first installment premiered in 2000 and enjoyed a surprise international success, grossing $213.5 million. In the US, it grossed $128 million, becoming the highest-grossing foreign-language film in American history.

From Vegas to Macau 3 starring Chow Yun-fat, Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, and Nick Cheung, is also slated to draw a audience, which will enable the film to emerge as box office big winner, too.
