The University of Hong Kong was ranked third, while University of Macau tails behind on the sixth place.

A total of 200 universities from 28 countries were included in list of the World's Most International Universities Ranking 2016 by Times Higher Education. Times Higher Education has been providing a definitive list of the best educational institutions in the world since 2004. It assesses universities based on a number of criteria including teaching, international outlook, research and reputation.

Although it is very rare for an institution outside the education powerhouses like UK and US to top the list, this year's list was topped by Qatar University based on international outlook. It seems that the Middle East's effort and investment into education and research is starting to pay off.  International outlook measure takes into consideration the ratio of international staff, foreign students and published research articles with at least one international co-author.

In second place is Luxembourg's University of Luxembourg. While four institutions from Switzerland were among the top 10, namely, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (4th), University of Geneva (5th), ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (7th) and University of St Gallen (8th). National University of Singapore in Singapore and Imperial College London in UK, completed the list at 9th and 10th places, respectively.
