Chinese technology giant Huawei and the third-largest Singaporean telecommunications carrier M1 have announced their achievement in reaching 4G peak download speeds of more than 1Gbps and peak upload speeds in excess of 130Mbps.

Huawei combined four network technologies - 4x4 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), Higher Order Modulation 256 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM),3CC tri-band downlink carrier aggregation, and two-component carrier (2CC) uplink carrier aggregation - for the trial with M1 Long Term Evolution (LTE) Advanced test lab. This trial was conducted with the use of existing commercial hardware infrastructure that Huawei has supplied and a prototype CAT14 device.

This is the first time for Huawei and M1 to achieve such a high combined download and upload speed. The most advanced 4G devices available commercially today is the LTE CAT9 devices that support download speeds of up to 450Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50Mbps.

Denis Skke, Chief Technical Officer of M1, noted that the capability of current 4G technology is stretched further to achieve an incredible peak download speed of more than 1Gbps to meet customers' expectations in uploading and sharing content on social media and other channels.

President Wang Jun of LTE Networks at Huawei claimed that mobile networks are moving forward from 4G towards 4.5G before the arrival of 5G in 2020. Delivering the benefits of the latest mobile technology advances to Singaporean consumers will enable better machine-to-machine connections and improved HD video experience, marking the beginning of 4.5G in Singapore.

Huawei recently announced that it shipped over 108 million smartphones during the year 2015 and accumulated a revenue of more than $20 billion in the process. On the other hand, M1 also announced that its third-quarter profit as of September reached over SG$44.9 million, a marginal year-on-year increase of 0.8 percent, on an operating revenue of SG$277.6 million.
