Spreading the Virus: FX Renews Vampire Series 'The Strain’ for Season Two

FX's "The Strain" is renewed for second season.

What a way to spread the virus. FX announced on Tuesday that "The Strain" has been renewed for a second season, which has been slotted to premiere in the summer of 2015.

John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions, said they have been confident all along in working with actor Corey Stoll and the rest of the cast members as well as with writer-director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter-producer Carlton Cuse.

He described the TV adaption of the three-book series as "everything we had hoped it would be and more."

"It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace," Landgraf said, adding, "We look forward to having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale."

"The Strain" has been the first attempt of FX in airing an original series every Sunday when primetime lineup is crammed. The vampire-infested show has raked in 12.7 million viewers, the highest number of viewers in FX history, when it premiered this summer. It is also the first-ever drama series exclusively produced by FX Prods.

As the best-selling vampire series' writer and the show's director, Del Toro has been highly pleased, saying how rewarding it has been to collaborate with FX and other key people.

"Working with Carlton, Chuck and FX has been immensely rewarding and we have such sights to unveil in the upcoming episodes - the blood hits the fan on this one, mankind becomes an endangered species," Del Toro said.

Similarly, showrunner Cuse expressed his keenness to take on another bite of the storyline and carry on with season two.

"I am grateful for all the blood, sweat and tears (but mostly blood) given to the project by all involved, and I could not be more excited to continue telling this epic story," the screenwriter-producer said.

"The Strain" stars Stoll, Mia Maestro, David Bradley, Sean Astin, and Jonathan Hyde, among others and airs every Sunday at 10 p.m. on FX.
