A simultaneous raid was conducted on several areas in eastern China including Linyi and some cities in Shandong province last week.  As a result, police have busted a human trafficking network, rescuing 15 infants and detaining 78 suspects.

Human trafficking has been rampant in poor western areas of China. The babies found with the syndicate were reportedly being sold to more prosperous coastal cities. During the raid, some of the women claimed to be the biological mothers of the children. The police are yet to prove this through DNA samples that were collected.

This will determine if the parents might be involved in selling their children for money.

In one of the poorest areas in western China, the Liangshan prefecture, the syndicate of human traffickers look for vulnerable victims and sell them in coastal Shangdong.

A report by ECNS reveals that Hama Erji from Xide County of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province is suspected to be the ring leader.

According to the authorities, their transportation network has penetrated other cities as well, stretching thousands of kilometres.

The investigation into the human traffic syndicate was started by the police in Liangshan last year. The Ministry of Public Security managed the case due to the gravity of the matter and the number of suspects and victims involved.

The operation resulted in 12 detained in Liangshan and 66 in Shandong. More than 30 of the suspects detained in Shandong will be sent back to Liangshan to await trial.

All the children rescued during the raid will be kept under proper care before being returned to their parents.
