The sensational Chinese qualifier Shuai Zhang's victory-run may have come to an end, but for the 2016 Australian Open quarterfinalist, her remarkable fairytale run was as good as winning the grand slam title.

Zhang yielded to British No. 1 tennis player Johanna Konta in their quarterfinals showdown 6-4, 6-1, ending her seven-match winning streak on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Tianjin native has had a spectacular tournament at the Melbourne, sailing through three qualifying matches and enjoying four remarkable wins in the main draw, where she beat a series of top tennis players way above her current ranking of No. 133.

In the opening round of the tennis competition, the Chinese qualifier enjoyed an upset victory against current world No. 2 Simona Halep and backed up her first round triumph with another couple of upset wins.

She outclassed the No. 33 Alize Cornet of France 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the competition and the world No. 51 Varvara Lepchenco of the United States yielded to Zhang with a 6-1, 6-3 loss in the third round of the prestigious tennis event.

Madison Key of the United States was also included in the list of her preys. Zhang defeated the current world No. 17 and the 15th seed of the tournament 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round of the prestigious tennis event.

Zhang had thought of retiring from the sport last year after going 0-14 in her previous Grand Slam matches.

"I'm feeling so tired. Everything was feeling very slow on court," she said, after her losing match against the British Konta on Rod Laver Arena.

"But in my heart I'm feeling I already won the tournament because I won seven matches. It doesn't matter win or lose today, I'll just keep going."

Zhang's ranking is now projected to soar into the top 70, making her China's number one player and pushing her closer to her goal of a spot at the Rio Olympics, which includes the top 56 players.
