MTV Receives Warning from Parents Television Council to Avoid Explicit Content in the VMAs

With a couple more days to go before the Video Music Awards, MTV has been called out by the Parents Television Council and warned about having another "public relations kerfuffle."

PTC president Tim Winter wrote a letter to MTV Networks' senior vice president for standards and practices Janet Borelli, which was then copied to the TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board.

In the letter, the watchdog group is apparently reminding the network as to how they stood by the scandalous moments of last year's awards show, including the over-the-top twerk-filled performance of Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.

"Parents and families around the country have had ample reason to be concerned about the material distributed and promoted by MTV over the years, particularly during MTV's original programming," Winter wrote.

He also mentioned that, while Cyrus and Thicke's disturbing performance raked in most of the headlines, what was more appalling was the fact that the network gave a TV-14 rating to the program, calling this "unacceptable".

"The 2013 VMAs were a public relations kerfuffle for your network that I feel certain you will not wish to repeat," the PTC president further wrote.

This year, the VMAs will be broadcasted live from Inglewood, California's The Forum; performances are expected from Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Rita Ora, Iggy Azalea, Usher, Ariane Grande, Maroon 5, and 5 Seconds of Summer.

PTC asked the network to comply with three proactive components for parents to be reassured. These include the avoidance of any type of explicit sexual content, avoidance of violation of MTV's own standards and practices, and accurate rating of the program based on the TV Parental Guidelines which specify that indecent language, explicit sexual acts, and graphic violence are only suitable for adults.

The letter's concluding remarks stated: "I eagerly await your prompt reply and sincerely hope MTV will help parents and families to better navigate their children's media environment."

The MTV Video Music Awards will air on August 24, Sunday, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
