Goliath grouper: Off the hook, going viral while swallowing a shark off Florida coast (Video)

Goliath grouper fans finally have met their match. It might not be on par with Jonah's whale, but it's close.

A video posted by a Bonita Springs, Fl. fisherman on Thursday says it all and it's saying it in the viral way. Everybody has been talking about it.

It's a social media beast of a sensation, too, with more than two million views on YouTube since being uploaded earlier this week. Now, you can see it here.

The fishing party didn't know their quest for sharks would turn out quite this way to be sure. They had a 4-foot blacktip shark swallow the bait, hook and sinker. Reeling it up toward the boat off the Lee County coast in southwest Florida, they got an unexpected surprise.

Usually, the law of the open sea jungle is in play. That means smaller sharks meet their demise at the teeth of bigger sharks, or at the hands of fishermen. Not so this time.

Sharks are fish and as such can fall prey to other, larger, fish. Such was the case when the goliath grouper swooped up out the deep blue sea and -- kaboom -- swallowed the shark whole in one fell gulp.

Snatching the shark off the line and swallowing it whole amazed and entertained the fishermen who didn't seem to mind losing their catch considering the spectacular nature of its demise.

Groupers, the largest seabass, can grow to 800 pounds. They act like beasts of the sea, too and have been known to stalk divers, according to University of Florida researchers.

Once abundant in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico amd Caribbean Sea, the goliath grouper has been fished nearly to death. Harvesting goliaths has been against U.S law since 1990. International thretened secies lists added the goliath one in 1994.

Aggressive groupers have been blamed in the last for doing just what this sucker did on Tuesday, swallowing hooked fish whole depriving fishermen of their hauls.

They are considered an endangered
