A high school in Central China really doesn't like young love.

Officials of the Ruyang Experimental High School in Henan province do not want their students to establish romantic relationships, which led them to a strange solution: separating the girls from the boys in the cafeteria.

Local media reported that a red line was put on the floor of the school's cafeteria. Male students are not supposed to cross to the female area, and vice versa.

The school said that this is to prevent the students from "food flirting," or feeding each other and showing public display of affection during lunch time. School officials believe that romantic relationships among the students will distract them from their studies.

"Puppy love in high school distracts students from their studies, and the school is taking action to prevent such relationships and put an end to feeding each other in the cafeteria," said Li Xinnian, the school principal.

But some students are not happy with the project.

"Even seats are assigned. They're telling us how to eat as well as managing our time," a junior at the school wrote on Weibo.

The project was only implemented last week, but officials are already getting their desired results.

"We've seen a sharp decrease in mixed seating, and no one has been feeding each other," said Li.

There are also school staff who roam the cafeteria during lunch time make sure that the school's more than 3,000 students do not deviate from the rule. These watchers take photos of violators.

"If we find students who violate the rule, we would just give them a talking-to and not criticize them in front of the school," Li explained, adding that the new rule is not compulsory.
