Reigning English Premier League champions Chelsea FC are reportedly preparing a multi-million dollar bid for Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos in the summer to give "significant upgrade" to their midfield options next season.

The Blues, who have struggled to defend their domestic title this season because of a rough start with recently sacked manager Jose Mourinho, are making a slight resurgence to keep away from the bottom three relegation group with the guidance of interim head coach Guus Hiddink.

Club officials are said to be keen on making the team significant contenders once again next season and it will reportedly begin with improving the midfielder positions.

Caught Offside reported that "Chelsea are likely to make some significant changes to their midfield this summer" and one of the primary targets for the Stamford Bridge giants is the 26-year-old Greifswald, East Germany native.

The current Pensioners midfield is composed of Cesc Fàbregas, Oscar, Willian, John Obi Mikel, Nemanja Matić, Bertrand Traoré, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and 2014-2015 Premier League Player of the Season Eden Hazard, all of whom, including Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain target Hazard, have struggled to be in form this year.

Hazard is reportedly on the list of Los Blancos' top summer targets despite his recent goalless performance in 20 appearances for Chelsea in the domestic top flight this season.

Kroos has also played almost the same, scoring only one goal for Los Vikingos in 22 La Liga games, but has registered seven assists as compared to Hazard's three.

Metro noted that "the German international is under contract at the Bernabeu until 2020, so Chelsea would likely need to pay a sizable fee to bring him to Stamford Bridge".

Kroos began his senior career playing for the B squad of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in 2007. He was quickly promoted to the first team just after a few months at the age of 17.

He was signed for eight seasons with Bayern with two of those spending a loan spell with Bayer Leverkusen in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010.

In July 2014, he was signed by Real to a six-year deal with at an estimated transfer fee of €25 million ($28 million) to €30 million ($33.5 million).
