English Premier League powerhouse Manchester United is reportedly considering to sell its team captain Wayne Rooney to a still unnamed Chinese Super League club for a whopping transfer fee of £100 million that will shatter the current record set by Real Madrid for Gareth Bale in 2013.

The 30-year-old United and England national team captain, who is currently sidelined for at least six to eight weeks with a knee injury, could be headed to China this summer as the Red Devils are said to be "open to selling" him, as per the Manchester Evening News.

It was also reported that Rooney could earn a weekly wage of £500,000, which would make him one of the highest-paid professional footballers in the world right now.

Bale was acquired by La Liga giant Real in September 2013 from the Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £85.3 million, which still stands today as the richest transfer on record. Prior to that, Los Blancos also set the record at £80 million when they snatched Cristiano Ronaldo from the Red Devils in 2009.

Meanwhile, ESPN reported that Rooney "is at the center of an incredible £100 million deal to lure him from Manchester United to China this summer".

Rumors had been out that CSL team Shanghai Shenhua submitted a £27 million bid to buy Rooney, but it was turned down by United. The Blue Devils, Shanghai Shenhua's nickname, is said to be keen on making the forward "the face of the Super League" soonest.

Rooney is said to be hesitant to make a move away from Manchester as his wife and three sons are deeply-rooted to a life in the English city. He previously turned down opportunities to live in Fulham and Paris, playing for Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, because of the said reason.

Another reason why it would be difficult for the Red Devils to sell Rooney is the fondness of corporate sponsors for the 5-foot-9 footballer.

Rooney remains to be one of the Premier League's most marketable players as he is said to be the "most requested player" by sponsors "to plug their brands, evidenced by shirt sponsor Chevrolet's recent viral video with the United no.10".
