Rumors are out that veteran point guard Ty Lawson is seeking a buyout from the Houston Rockets to have the opportunity to reunite with former Denver Nuggets teammate Carmelo Anthony in New York.

Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the mercurial playmaker and the Rockets are currently "exploring a contract buyout" as Houston is contemplating on using the savings to be created "to clear salary-cap space to acquire other players becoming available through (other) buyouts" this season.

Wojnarowski also noted that the Rockets have tried to trade the 28-year-old floor general before the deadline earlier this month, but the franchise has not found a suitable trading partner that gave them the deal that they want.

It was also said that the 2009 NCAA champion "is still owed $3.2 million on his 2015-16 contract, having already been paid $9.2 million" while Houston is still "$524,000 under the hard salary cap".

The Rockets are currently in the eighth spot of the Western Conference standings with a 29-30 record and could still hold on to qualify for the postseason, which is why team officials are still fighting to find a way to improve the roster.

Houston's experiment with Lawson complementing the game of team leader James Harden has been unsuccessful thus far and so the 5-foot-11 point guard is fast-becoming expendable in the rotation of interim head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

Lawson is averaging only 5.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 22.5 minutes of playing time a night in 52 games for the Rockets this season, which is a far cry from the 15.2 points, 3.1 boards, and 9.6 assists in 35.5 minutes per game he averaged last season with the Nuggets.

Meanwhile, Fansided predicts that the Knicks may "gamble" on acquiring Lawson should the Rockets decide to waive him, noting that "point guard play has been the most glaring weakness in 2015-16" of New York.

At this time, the Knicks are rotating three point guards in their lineup with veteran Jose Calderon as the starter, rookie Jerian Grant as primary backup, and undrafted sophomore Langston Galloway as third-stringer.
