Sprint Plans to Resurrect Two-Year Service Contract

United States network provider Sprint is planning to resurrect the two-year service contract after it decided to ditch it earlier this year.

"We listened to our customers and are giving them more choices to get their new device. Sprint is the only carrier to offer the most choices to obtain a new device - lease, installment bill, two-year contract or pay full retail price," Sprint spokeswoman Michelle Leff Mermelstein told Fierce Wireless.

Sprint's official website now gives customers four options when acquiring a new phone. Interested customers can either lease the device, pay the price of the device in monthly installment plans, sign a 24-month service contract, or pay the full price of the device upfront.

Through Sprint's pricing scheme, customer can avail a 16GB iPhone 6S for a full price of $649.99, $199.99 through a two-year contract, $27.09 per month for 24 months through installment and $26.39 in under the leasing mode.

The decision to reinstate the 24-month service contract came as a surprise for the tech community since Sprint ditched the two-year contract scheme in January. Sprint joined other tier-one carriers in discontinuing the service contracts in hopes of attracting more subscribers.

T-Mobile was the first to dump the two-year service contract scheme way back in 2013. The decision was widely criticized at that time and was considered by many market analysts as a sort of desperate move for the company. However, since ditching the two-year service contract scheme, T-Mobile had slowly moved up the ranks in the tier-one mobile network battle.

Competitors like Verizon and AT&T realized the big potential of the model and quickly followed suit - dumping the two-year contract model in 2015. Verizon ditched the practice in August 2015, while AT&T and Sprint both stopped offering contracts early in January.
