Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi is planning to come back and play for the association football top flight competition of his native Argentina before he finally calls his career quits, according to latest reports.

The 28-year-old forward, considered by the majority as the greatest football player in the world today, had started his youth career with Argentine Primera División team Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys when he was just six years old and stayed with the club until he joined Barcelona's youth academy in 2001 when he turned 14.

SkySports reported that Messi "has again outlined his desire to play in his native Argentina before his career ends", but that the Barça superstar "insists he has put no timeframe on a return".

From his humble beginnings, the Argentina international has so far led his Barcelona teams to capture seven Spanish domestic top flight championships, three Copa del Reys, and four UEFA Champions League titles, which could still be added to since he is still in his prime years as a footballer.

The current La Liga leaders just broke Real Madrid's 28-year-old record of consecutive undefeated games in all competitions, finishing their 35th straight unbeaten match in spectacular fashion by routing Rayo Vallecano, 5-1, on the road at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas on Thursday.

Messi was ruthless in the game, unloading a hat trick against the hapless Los Vallecanos, which were his 303rd, 304th, and 305th goals with the Catalonia giants, also a record.

"It's something that I would still like to do. I don't know when, but it's a possibility," Messi told local news outlet El Grafico, as reported by Caught Offside.

"I haven't set myself any goals, short or long term, but I'd like to keep playing whilst my body allows it and I have something to offer the team. When I know that it's time, I'll make a decision," he added.

Messi had also repeated his desire to win more titles for the Argentina national team, which he believes he has not done enough as compared to his club accomplishments.

The report ended that "while he has plenty more to achieve in Europe, it would arguably be a fitting way to end his career, and certainly the sentimental choice, were he to return to where it all began".
