Slack Releases Native Voice Support on Messaging app

Slack

(Photo : Facebook) Slack has added a new voice call feature to its app.

Startup tech company Slack rolled out a new voice calling feature on March 2. The new feature allows users to talk to each other on one-on-one chat or group conference calls.

Slack is known mainly for its text-based communication platform. Many tech analysts agree that integrating a voice feature into its platform will greatly make the service more appealing to users. The company said it has long considered adding voice feature into its service.

Slack's new voice feature was released in beta version. The company has said that the feature has been released to a selected niche of users - less than half of all of Slack's users have access to the new feature. Slack has told administrators can check their websites to see if it is available for them to use.

Slack's new voice feature is available for the Windows and Mac platforms, as well as Google Chrome. Once users are engaged in a direct messaging conversation, they can click on a handset icon in order to initiate an audio call with the person they are chatting with.

A pop-up notification will appear at the receiving end of the call to alert users about the incoming call as well as the option to pick up or decline the call.

In a group conference setup, all participants are first asked whether they want to start a voice call and then they are asked to create a name for that specific call. A notification will then be posted in the channel, which will allow up to 15 users to participate in the conference all.

Once users are on a conference call, they have the option to post emojis.

Slack is still working to make the new feature available on mobile platforms like iOS and Android. The company added that it is also working on a Linux version of the app.
