A Chinese woman who went missing since January 30 was found dead inside an elevator that was temporarily shut down for maintenance work in a residential building in Beijing.

The rotting body of the 43-year-old woman was found in an elevator in Xian City. The said elevator was shut down on January 30 by two maintenance workers who were assigned to check on a glitch.

The two maintenance workers have already been detained pending a thorough investigation. Authorities said the death of the woman was caused by the gross negligence on the part of the two workers.

Based on data released by the Gaoling district government, the two maintenance workers, who have not been identified, were tasked to check on a glitch on the said elevator.

Without checking if someone was still inside the elevator, the two maintenance workers allegedly cut off the elevator's power supply on January 30.

Another maintenance crew returned to check and to repair the elevator on March 1. It was then that they found a female corpse, according to the government. It was not known why it took one month for maintenance workers to check and make the necessary repairs on the elevator.

The woman was immediately identified as a resident of the building who was living by herself. Her identity was not divulged by authorities.

Initially, the police said there were no signs of foul play but they have concluded that the death of the woman was due to the gross negligence on the part of the maintenance workers.

The Gaoling district government said the two maintenance workers are facing a case of involuntary manslaughter.
