Tennis News: Varatchaya Wongteanchai and Yang Zhaoxuan Upset Top Seeds to Claim BMW Malaysian Open

(Photo : gettyimages.com) Yang Zhaoxuan of China and Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand have won their first ever WTA Tour doubles title at the BMW Malaysian Open.

The tennis tandem of Yang Zhaoxuan of China and Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand won their first ever WTA Tour doubles title in the BMW Malaysian Open on Sunday at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

The winning pair defeated the defending champions and tournament's top seeds Liang Chen and Wang Yafan of China 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 and avenged their loss in the finals of the Hua Hin Championships in Thailand four months ago.

"We are very happy to win here. It is only the fourth time we are playing as a pair and we have achieved a title," Wongteanchai, who became the first player from Southeast Asia to claim a title at the Malaysian Open, said.

Wongteanchai, who was born in Chiangrai, has won four singles and twenty-four doubles titles on the ITF tour in her career. The Thail tennis ace reached her best singles ranking of world number 200 on July 20, 2015. She is currently the no. 274 in the world rankings. She presently holds the 177th spot in the doubles rankings and she peaked at world number 118 in the doubles rankings on February 4, 2013.

Meanwhile, Yang has three singles and seven doubles titles on the ITF tour under her name. She is the current 176th best player in the world and reached her best singles ranking of world number 151 on September 14, 2015.

The Chinese tennis ace is currently the world no. 113 in the doubles ranking and reached her career high in doubles ranking of world number 103 on November 16, 2015.

She partnered with Ye Qiuyu in her WTA tour debut at the 2014 Shenzhen Open, but they lost in the first round match of the said tournament.

The tennis tourney winners will receive US$12,300 (RM 49,962.00), while the runners-up will take home US$6,400 (RM 25,996.00).
