A former Miss Spain has revealed that she is a lesbian, making her the first gay national beauty queen who has publicized her sexual orientation.

While Patricia Yurena Rodriguez won the title and crown last 2008 and 2013, she just recently took to social media and showed a photo of herself lying in bed with her musician girlfriend, DJ Vanesa Klein.

Last August 19, the 24-year-old posted the photo on Instagram with the caption, "Romeo and Juliet," raking in almost 7,000 likes and more than 1,000 comments from her online followers.

Rodriguez told the newspaper La Opinión de Tenerife in Spanish, "I do not regret what I did because I'm thrilled with what is happening to me."

After being chosen as Miss Spain in 2008, the brunette beauty was sent to Johannesburg in South Africa to compete for Miss World, earning a slot as one of the Top 15 semi-finalists.

In 2013, the beauty queen had also been a runner-up at the Miss Universe that took place in Moscow. That same year, the pageant stirred up controversies due to Russia's strict anti-gay policies. The competition had also caused trouble in the past for attempting to ban a transgender contestant from joining.

Last Thursday, another photo from the beauty queen was posted in her Instagram feed as Rodriguez thanked her fans for the support and understanding. She explained that her revelation was not a planned scheme and that she genuinely felt the need to express and share her real story.

"I appreciate the outpouring of support and even more, to rejoice in my happiness," the beauty queen wrote. "Thank you!!"

Rodriguez opened up to Costa Rican publication La Nacion that she and her musician girlfriend were introduced by mutual pals and began dating several months ago.

Despite their home country focusing mostly on Roman Catholic practices, Spain has made same-sex marriage legal in 2005.
