BBC News reported that according to former United defender Nemanja Vidic "the club will have a tough choice to make between Jose Mourinho and Ryan Giggs if they decide to replace Louis van Gaal as manager".

The two bench tacticians are said to be the "frontrunners" to replace the 64-year-old Dutch mentor this summer following a tumultuous season by Manchester's standards.

Vidic, a recently retired center back that played for the Red Devils from 2006 to 2014, explained that the 42-year-old Giggs is already quite familiar with the club and its players and vice versa, so he should be ideal as the next manager.

"I like the idea of Giggsy, but Mourinho has had success in the past," said Vidic, as reported by the Daily Star. "It's a hard choice. Is Giggsy ready or not? He knows. The club knows. I believe they will have an honest conversation."

"I want someone who knows the club and does the best for the club. I shared a dressing room with Giggs. I know he will do that," he added.

However, Vidic also noted that the 53-year-old Mourinho, who also had stints with other world-class clubs such as Porto, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid, is "one of the game's best ever managers" and so it would be a "tough choice" for team officials to make.

"Mourinho plays football in a certain way, that is well known, but I definitely respect Mourinho as a manager. He is one of the greatest ever, along with Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson," he said.

Vidic was signed by United in December of 2005 for a fee of £7 million from Russian Premier League side FC Spartak Moscow. He was sold to Inter Milan in July 2014 for an undisclosed fee. After two seasons of playing for Internazionale, the 34-year-old Serbian decided to retire.
