Huang, who is coming fresh from a win over the top seeded player Son Wan-Ho of South Korea, overpowered the world No. 61 Soo in two straight sets 21-18, 21-17.

"Obviously, I am happy to have won the game but it was tough because Teck Zhi Soo was strong on the smash and was able to play very good shots on both sides of the court that tested me," Huang said. "Yesterday's win was hard but I don't look at games in front or behind of me, only on what I have to do in the moment. He attacked whenever he could but I was patient and forced him into making key mistakes at important moments."

In the other semifinal matches, Riichi Takeshita of Japan advanced to the tourney's final round and set a championship showdown with Huang. The world's 143rd ranked Japanese defeated Vietnam's Tien Minh Nguyen without dropping a set 21-15, 21-17.

Defending champions of the men's doubles event Huang Kaixiang and Zheng Siwei of China failed to advance to the final round of the tournament and ended their run for another New Zealand Open title. The Chinese tandem bowed out to the dynamic duo of Angga Pratama and Ricky Suwardi of Indonesia with a 21-19, 24-22 defeat.

The third-seeded pair will be facing the South Korean pair of Sung Hyun Ko and Baek Cheol Shin, the second seed of the international badminton event, in the finals.

Lastly, Japan's Aya Ohori and Ji Hyun Sung will clash in the women's singles finals.
