With NBA legend Michael Jordan in the stands, Roger Federer won his US Open opening match, and dazzled the crowd with a shot from between his legs. The former Swiss champion met Australian Marinko Matosevic.

The first set saw both players hold serve, until Federer eventually breaking Matosevic and gaining the set point soon after.

The following set saw Matosevic find his rhythm with his serve, as Federer was struggling to return them. Federer held serve though and capitalized on a few errors to win his second set point.

The final set came to a tie break, where Federer utilizes his slice to pull away and win the match with straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6.

While both players were exciting to watch, it was Federer's between-the-legs return shot that hit Matosevic on his back. That shot also seemed to give Michael Jordan in the audience the most enjoyment - he was smiling and shaking his head.

In an interview afterwards, Federer expressed his joy at Jordan coming to watch him play that night. He revealed that when he was younger, he was a basketball fan who idolized none other than the "His Airness."

"He was my hero of all sports," said Federer.

The 33-year old Federer is seen as the favorite to win the tournament. He has the best record in the tour so far, with 50 wins and nine losses. His record on hard courts is similarly good at 33-5.

He is playing his record-breaking 60th consecutive major, and holds records for his 17 titles, 23 consecutive semifinals, and 10 straight finals appearances.

With his successful opening match, Federer has placed the bid for his 18th grand slam title.
