Google has announced the launching of Fiber phone, adding a home telephone service to its existing Fiber high-speed internet and cable TV offerings.

Earlier this week, Alphabet introduced Fiber phone. It costs $10 monthly, giving the customers unlimited nationwide texts and calls, plus caller ID, call waiting, and 911 emergency calls. It is similar to Google Voice, the more or less dormant voicemail service within the search giant. Fiber Phone transcribes voicemails and can be set to ring the mobile phone when the user is out.

Fiber phone is also cloud-based that allows users to keep the number and use it from any tablet, laptop, or phone including a landline, receiving and placing calls as well. The service will also transcribe voicemails for the users and text directly the transcripts, which is also a similar feature of Google Voice has been doing for years.

“Landlines can be familiar, reliable and provide high-quality service, but the technology hasn’t always kept up. That’s why today, we’re introducing Fiber Phone as a new option to help you stay connected wherever you are.” Google Fiber said in a blog post.

Google will roll out Fiber phone gradually. Presently, three cities including Austin, Kansas City and Provo are already up and running the Google Fiber. It may expand to cities such as Salt Lake City, Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham. Just recently, cities including Kentucky and Huntsville, Alabama joined the list of Fiber city candidates.

Google's Fiber Phone service may help enticing new clients of big telecom players such as AT&T with broadband and TV service. This service could appeal to families who already subscribe to Google's broadband and TV services but who also still pay for a landline service from another company.
