Japanese car manufacturer Subaru is recalling a total of 78 cars in China due to faulty turbocharger, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The recall came less than a week after Chrysler and Maserati announced recalling 60,000 cars and 21,000 vehicles, respectively, due to different defects.

In the latest recall, China's top quality watchdog said Subaru will start recalling Legacy, Outback, and Forester vehicles on 22 April to replace the defective turbochargers for free.

The faulty turbocharger intake manifold could crack any time and cause the engine to suddenly stop, the official Xinhua news agency has reported.

The recall involves Legacy vehicles manufactured from September 11 to October 20, 2015; Outback cars manufactured from April 16 to October 12, 2015; and Forester vehicles manufactured from June 30 and October 16, 2015.

Subaru vowed to inspect all affected vehicles and replace the defective parts for free to ensure that risks are eliminated.

Last year, the Japanese car manufacturer recalled 1,002 vehicles in the country due to airbag defects.

The recall involved imported Subaru Impreza manufactured between February 2, 2004 and June 15, 2007, according to China's top quality watchdog.

According to reports, the defective front passenger airbags could cause an abnormal breakup of the airbags' gas generators and hurt passengers when expanding.
