Haggard endured a rough and problematic life following the death of his father. He was jailed many times when he was young until he successfully made a turn after finding success in music. His songs, which were dedicated to the working class, were such huge hits that he landed the Billboard's top spot many times over.

Together with Buck Owens, Haggard and his band 'The Strangers' popularized the Bakersfield sound known for the twang of Fender Telecaster and its original mix of traditional country steel guitar sound, new vocal harmony styles and the use of only few words.

Haggard eventually became synonymous with the outlaw country movement. Haggard lingered on through the 2000s with successful albums one after the other. His achievements were recognized well. In 1994, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and in 1997 into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

Tributes from colleagues and fans immediately flowed on social media networks.

"Country music has suffered one of the greatest losses it will ever experience Rest in peace Merle Haggard," Charles Daniel tweeted.

Fellow country legend Willie Nelson revealed that he was greatly saddened by the death of Haggard, who he considered a brother and friend.

"I will miss him," Nelson wrote.

Lee Ann Womak praised Haggard for being a "true legend" who "always inspired," but "never contrived."

"We've lost one of the greatest writers and singers of all time," said Dolly Parton. "His heart was as tender as his love ballads. I loved him like a brother. Rest easy, Merle."
